Am I A Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

Although weight loss surgery can put many people on the path to better health, it is not right for everyone. To be eligible for bariatric surgery at Georgia Regents Weight Loss Center, you must have a long history of obesity and meet requirements that minimize your risk of complications. Bariatric surgery candidates must be adults who fully understand the need to commit to lifestyle changes and have unsuccessfully tried alternate methods for weight loss. Other criteria include:

  • Excess weight reflecting National Institute of Health Guidelines for Weight Loss Surgery as indicated by the following:

- Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more or

- BMI of 35-39 with an obesity-related condition such as sleep apnea, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease or liver disease to qualify for Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy and Adjustable Gastric Banding procedures or

- BMI above 30 with an obesity-related medical condition to qualify for Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure

  • Evaluation by members of the Georgia Regents Weight Loss Center team, including medical, nutritional, psychological and surgical examinations

  • Lack of substance abuse problems, including tabacco, alcohol and other drugs

  • Weigh less than 400 pounds

- If you weigh more than 400 pounds, you may be able to prepare for surgery in our Medical Weight Loss Program
