Stroke is caused by atherosclerosis, a progressive disease of the arteries resulting in plaque deposits. These plaque deposits can cause a narrowing or stenosis in the carotid arteries, increasing the risk for stroke. Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure performed to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with severe stenosis of the internal carotid artery, and history of a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke, or other significant risk factors. Carotid endarterectomy should be performed by surgeons with a complication rate of less than 6% for patients with history of TIA or stroke, and less than 3% for patients without prior TIA or stroke.
