Interpreter and Translational Services

Georgia Regents Medical Center recognizes and supports the needs of Limited English Proficient (LEP), deaf and hard-of-hearing patients who may require assistance in communicating with hospital and clinic staff. Interpreter and Translational Services is dedicated to help healthcare providers bridge the gap with LEP and hearing impaired patients through an accurate interpretation.

Why Interpreter and Translational Services?
As the local population becomes more diverse we find ourselves interacting more and more with patients from many different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Culture and language are vital factors in how health care services are delivered and received. It is important that our staff understands and responds with sensitivity to the needs and preferences that culturally and linguistically diverse patients bring to the health encounter.

Interpreter and Translational Services has an array of services, as established by policy 14.58, to support our mission. We have trained Spanish Medical Interpreters available 24/7. For languages other than Spanish we have contracted CyraCom International, a transparent language service that specializes on medical interpretations in over 150 different languages. Interpreter and Translational Services also coordinate access to licensed American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for the hearing impaired.

Contact the Interpreter and Translational Services during business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at 706-721-6929. After hours, holidays, and weekends please contact the paging operator at 706-721-3893. You may be asked the following information:

  • Name and hospital number of patient
  • Language required
  • Location and room number
  • Name of attending physician
  • Name and phone number of staff requesting an interpreter
  • A brief explanation of the medical concern
  • An estimated length of time

Language Other Than Spanish
Contact the Interpreter and Translational Services during business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 706-721-6929 or the Nursing House Supervisor’s office at 706-721-4740 for after hours, holidays and weekends to access the language services of CyraCom International.

For emergency room patients (to include Adult, Pediatric and the Labor & Delivery areas) contact the Charge Nurse to access CyraCom language service in that area.

Sign Language Interpreters
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are available by appointment only. Arrangements for this service must be made as much in advance as possible. Contact Interpreter and Translational Services Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to schedule a Sign Language Interpreter. Notify the CLAS department immediately of any cancellation or reschedule of appointment.

In case of an emergency, and  to ensure access to qualified sign language interpreters 24/7, Georgia Regents Medical Center has contracted the services of DT Interpreting. With their Deaf-Talk system they have become pioneers in the field of Sign Language interpretations using tele-video conferencing technology. The system is available through the Interpreter and Translational Services. Please contact us at 706-721-6929.
