U.S.NEWS & WORLD REPORT NAMES MCG MEDICAL CENTER AMONG TOP 50 IN HORMONAL DISORDERS

Augusta, Ga. --  MCG Medical Center has once again been named to the list of “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The medical center was ranked 48 out of the top 50 hospitals in the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders such as diabetes and thyroid conditions.

“Only 177 of all 6,012 U.S. medical centers were named to this prestigious list,” said Don Snell, President and CEO of MCG Health, Inc. “This is a significant achievement that demonstrates our high quality of care.”

“Diabetes is a chronic and many times life-threatening disease,” added Dr. Anthony L. Mulloy, Chief, Section of Endocrinology and Nutrition. “Diabetics are at increased risk for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and eye disease. Our inclusion in the U.S. News list means that we have excelled in all of these areas as a medical center.”

U.S. News & World Report annually publishes rankings of the 50 top hospitals in 17 specialties. In 12 of the 17 specialties (including hormonal disorders), hospitals are selected on the basis of belonging to the Council of Teaching Hospitals, being affiliated with a medical school or having at least nine of a prescribed list of 17 technology-related services.  Eligibility for ranking also depends on performing a certain number of specific medical and surgical procedures during the period of 2000 to 2002, or on being recommended by at least one physician in U.S. News surveys during the past three years.

Hospitals that meet these requirements also receive a U.S. News Score that equally weighs three elements: reputation, mortality and a group of other factors related to patient care, such as nursing and patient services.

With its inclusion on the U.S. News list, MCG Medical Center joins such nationally recognized institutions as the Mayo Clinic, Duke University Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The MCG Medical Center was last named on U.S News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list in 2001, once again in the area of hormonal disorders.
