Depression Not Just for Adults

Children can suffer from depression just like adults do, but they have different symptoms. School-age children may be less confident or feel like they can't do anything right. Older children may stop caring about themselves or family members and may not want to go to school. Here are other behavior changes that may mean depression: a sudden drop in grades; shouting, complaining or crying; thoughts of death or suicide; fear or anxiety; aggression or other antisocial behavior; alcohol or drug use; and constant complaints of aches and pains with no cause. Counseling and medications can help cure depression.
