  • Top baked potatoes with salsa, nonfat yogurt or butter sprinkles.

  • Order fresh fish poached or steamed instead of deep-fried.

  • Watch your condiments. Good choices are ketchup, mustard and barbecue sauce.

  • When preparing beef stews, trim all visible fat from the meat before cooking

  • Steam vegetables and top with lemon juice and herbs.

  • Halve the butter or margarine called for when preparing packaged rice, potato or macaroni dishes. Consider eliminating the butter or margarine altogether.

  • Try different fat-free frozen yogurts and find one that satisfies your palate the way full-fat ice cream does.
