Menopause usually begins when a woman is about 52 years old, but it can happen much earlier or later. One sign that menopause is starting is irregular periods, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. See a doctor if you're having irregular periods, are bleeding between regular periods or have heavy bleeding or bleeding that lasts longer than usual.
