Taking Medications Safely

  • Know why you were prescribed the medicine and what it is supposed to do.

  • Follow your doctor's instructions about how much to take and how often.

  • Read the package label or patient information sheet.

  • Don't take someone else's prescription.

  • Don't take any medication without your doctor's approval if you're pregnant or nursing.

  • Read and heed all directions, warnings and precautions.

  • Don't take medications and vitamin or mineral supplements at the same time without first checking with your health care provider or pharmacist.

  • Call your doctor, 911 or your area's emergency-response number if you are suffering a life-threatening allergic reaction to a medication.
