Folate's Role in Good Health

Folate is important to help prevent birth defects, but it also may help prevent strokes and heart attacks, according to the National Institutes of Health. Researchers think that folate regulates the body's levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that may increase the risk for these illnesses. Green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and juices, whole wheat bread and dry beans are good sources of folate. The FDA requires that folic acid be added to breads, cereals, flours, cornmeal, pasta, and rice.
