How to Use a Ladder Properly

  • Use the proper ladder for the weight it will carry; look for a label stating how much weight the ladder can carry.

  • Don't stand on the top step of a stepladder; don't stand on the top three rungs of an extension or straight ladder.

  • Don't extend your body too far to either side. This might cause you or the ladder to become unbalanced.

  • When using an extension ladder to climb a roof, make sure the ladder clears the roofline by about three feet.

  • Don't use a ladder in a strong wind and don't use it near power lines.

  • Make sure the ladder is level on the ground. On soft ground, use boards under the ladder to keep it level.

  • Set up the ladder at an approximate 75-degree angle to the wall.

  • Climb up and down the ladder facing it.

  • When working with tools on a ladder, wear a tool belt to keep your hands as free as possible.
