Follow-Up Appointments Count When You Have Kidney Cancer

Many side effects of treatment are not serious, and they end once the treatment ends. Some side effects may go away quickly. Others may take several months to disappear. Some side effects may develop over time or be a sign of more serious harm from treatment. For instance, biological therapy can occasionally damage other organs, such as your heart, thyroid, or liver.

For these reasons, make sure you tell your health care team about symptoms or side effects you have. Often the best way to do that is to keep your follow-up appointments. They help your doctor to closely monitor your condition. And a big benefit is that it helps him or her do everything possible to prevent side effects or reduce their seriousness. For instance, your doctor may prescribe certain medications or extra fluids to help remove broken-down kidney cancer cells from your body.

To help you deal with the medical information and remember all of your questions, it is helpful to bring a family member or close friend with you to follow-up appointments. It is also important to write down your questions before your appointments, and make certain they are all answered before you leave.
