Overview of Your Treatment Choices for Stomach Cancer

Researchers are continually finding new ways to treat stomach cancer. People diagnosed with it now have more hope for survival than ever before.

The choices that you have for treatment depend on these factors.

  • Type, size, and location of the tumor in your stomach

  • Results of lab tests

  • Extent of the disease, called the stage

  • Status of your health and your age

  • Your personal concerns and preferences

Many people with stomach cancer want to learn all they can about their cancer and treatment choices so that they can make confident decisions about their care. If you’re one of them, you’re likely to have many questions. Most people want to know how they will function after treatment and whether they will have to change their normal activities. Your doctor is the best person to answer your questions about treatment choices, the success of certain types of treatment, the possible risks and side effects, and the cost of treatment.

Your doctor may recommend a specific treatment. Or he or she may offer more than one, giving you a choice of treatment plans. This can be a hard decision to make. There is often more than one right answer, with different possible benefits and risks. It’s important to take the time you need to make the best decision for you.

Treatment choices for each person depend on the type and stage of the cancer, or how far it has spread, as well as the way in which it grows, called the pathophysiology. A medical oncologist also considers your age and general health when making treatment recommendations. You will also have personal considerations. You may be overwhelmed at first with the information you receive from your doctor. Take the time you need to gather as much information as possible.
