Hand Hygiene Campaign
Hand Hygiene is a primary patient safety issue. In the spring of 2008, we began routine monthly monitoring of our staff’s compliance with hand hygiene. At that time, our baseline compliance was 41%. Since that time, we have seen steady improvement in our hand hygiene rates through the education of our patients, families, and staff.
“Secret shoppers” are actively doing observations on all shifts, including weekends. Our compliance rates are now consistently in the 90’s.
Each nursing unit’s hand hygiene rates are shared in the monthly Quality Unit Council dashboards. The staff is able to review the data and make improvements to consistently be at or above 90% compliance.
