Black History Month

Amanda Dickson Toomer was the daughter of a plantation owner and a slave. When the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that she could inherit from her father’s plantation, she became the wealthiest black woman in America. She used her inheritance to buy a large home at 448 Telfair St., where she lived until her death in 1893. The 2000 movie, “A House Divided,” tells her life story.
